elysium-ew2Matt Damon (a Max De Costa) putting in work

I honestly don’t know what more can be said about this film that already hasn’t been said about a triple A video game. This LOOKS like a video game. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has taken some of the best parts of some of the world’s most acclaimed gaming properties, put them in a blender, and hit purée! When I look at this film I see Mass Effect. I see Halo. I see Deus Ex. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Elysium is set in the year 2154 where the wealthy live on a giant space station, named after the film itself, which is a massive space age metropolis that orbits the earth. There’s zero crime, war, poverty, hunger, and disease. Meanwhile the people of Earth live in poverty, high crime rates, rampant disease and sickness, and lack of food sources. Max De Costa (played by Matt Damon) find himself diagnosed with terminal cancer and no way to cure himself… unless he can get himself to Elysium. But to do so he will have to take on the forces of Elysium (who don’t like outsiders) AND they’re despotic leader, Secretary Delacourt (played by Jodie Foster).

Since District 9 I’ve always been curious what Blomkamp would do next and I was seriously hoping we’d get a follow up to the aforementioned movie that put him on the map. Honestly. After seeing this trailer I’m OK with the decision to move on to a new project. Having Sharlto Kopley (District 9, A-Team) on board was also a nice touch. Why break up an A+ team? I have a serious notion Microsoft really wishes they would have had more faith and trusted Peter Jackson to let him direct the Halo movie. Afterall, he’s STILL using the material, set pieces, and props that they spent the money on in the first place!
