A while back we added Tokusatsu to our repertoire. And for those unfamiliar with the term its a genre in Japan that is relegated to any live-action film or television drama that features considerable use of special effects. The word literally means “special filming”. Even though the event has already occurred overseas where Tensou Sentai Goseiger had their major crossover event, we are finally getting our version over here with its Americanized counterparts, Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce, for a 20th anniversary episode.
In the series they have an event where many of the Rangers from the previous eighteen series (twenty-two in Japan) return to show off their stuff alongside the current Ranger cast. Many different Rangers will be returning from the various series installments – in particular from Light Speed Rescue, Turbo, Lost Galaxy, RPM, Jungle Fury, so on and so on and so on. The reason why we’re talking about this is because arguably the most popular character since Saban Entertainment even started the Power Rangers franchise here – Tommy Oliver! (Played by Jason David Frank) I don’t care if you’re a passing fan, and old school only fan, a japanese version only fan, or you’re a guilty pleasure or secret fan and too embarrassed or ashamed to admit. – you KNOW who the Green Ranger is… And regardless of your feelings for the series on the whole… he’s probably your favorite character. Or at the very least he’s the one character you remember because let’s be honest – He was pretty damn awesome.
For those unfamiliar with character (what rock did you live on, it’s on Netflix for Christ’s sakes!) Tommy was a character and Ranger on the show who was a Ranger and stalwart co-leader. He eventually had to leave the show because Saban Entertainment used stock footage from the Japanese progenitor, Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, and SPOILER ALERT——————— the character dies and there isn’t enough footage to sustain his staying on the show in the American version.
Personally I’m excited to see how this turns out. I had a falling out with Power Rangers (like many old school fans) when the Turbo series started. Saban Entertainment couldn’t decide whether or not it wanted to keep the original cast through each subsequent series or make new characters for each (like they do in Japan) and got really wishy-washy around then. Power Ranger SPD brought me back temporarily and later Power Rangers Samurai reeled me some more, but ultimately the Japanese Super Sentai versions held my attention a bit more. I also tend to be more of a Kamen Rider fan (occasionally Masked Rider over here) and even the Ranger series across the water has absorbed some tropes from that series.
The crossover is something that’s happened in various other Ranger series, at least once a season. Typically its only one or more Rangers from a previous series who find their way into another Ranger’s series. Here they will be bringing in a full armada of Rangers. The closest thing they’ve done to this is the Forever Red crossover where all the previous Red Rangers teamed up (Tommy included as Zeo Ranger One) to take down General Vinjix and company. I hope this turns out to be great. I really do. A date for the airing of this major crossover has yet to be announced, so stayed tuned for more updates!
