Saint Seiya, or Knights of the Zodiac as it is commonly referred to stateside, is getting an all CG animated feature film courtesy of Toei Animations! Even better yet, it will be getting the 3D treatment. For those unfamiliar with the subject matter Saint Seiya was an anime and manga series by famed creator Masami Kuromada. His mythological fantasy epic featured a group of warriors called Saints, who fight wearing sacred armors named “Cloths”, the designs of which derive from the various constellations the characters have adopted as their destined guardian symbols, and empowered by a mystical energy called “Cosmo”. The Saints have sworn to defend the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Athena in her battle against the other Olympian gods who want to dominate Earth.
The series was wildly popular in Japan, and found success over in here in the States back in the late 80’s. A revival of sorts started back in 2004 where the series was picked back up and continued in the form of OVA’s and later an animated feature film. This new endeavor by Toei Animation will be helmed by Keiichi Satou, of Tiger & Bunny and Ashura fame, while Tomohiro Suzuki, who wrote six episodes of Tiger & Bunny, will be the scriptwriter.
I hope this works out seeing as how the Gatchaman CG feature film never panned out. Fortunately it’s getting a live action treatment instead, but with a Captain Harlock CG feature film coming up I think this one is safe to make to the finish line. What do you our people in Realist Land think? Fan of the series? Not a fan? Excited? Indifferent? Let us know!
